YMCA of Fredericton Responds to Unprecedented Demand for Camp Support

YMCA of Fredericton Responds to Unprecedented Demand for Camp Support

Fredericton, NB — The YMCA of Fredericton is answering an urgent call for support this summer, providing financial assistance to more than 250 children between the ages of 6 and 13 to attend YMCA day camps — a fivefold increase in just two years.

This unprecedented demand for camp support reflects a growing number of families who are facing economic pressures and seeking opportunities for their children to stay active, connected, and engaged during the summer months.

Thanks to the generous contributions from the Epsilon Y Service Club as well as increased community support for the YMCA’s Gift of Camp program, more children than ever are able to access safe, inclusive, and enriching summer camp experiences.

“Many families in our community are struggling to keep pace with rising costs of living,” said Darcy Delaney, President and CEO of the YMCA of Fredericton. “The Y will always be here to make sure all children have access to life-changing experiences like day camp.”

“We have been so fortunate to receive more funding for our Gift of Camp program,” said Elizabeth Kearns, Director of Development. “Over each of the past two years our impact has doubled — from supporting fewer than 50 children in camp to over 250 this summer.”

Among those receiving support, more than 20% are enrolled in the Youth Power Up Camp Program, a specialized offering for middle school–aged children that includes volunteering, community service, and leadership development. The camp continues the YMCA’s Power Up Program, which runs during the school year and focuses on building confidence, resilience, and positive social connections.

“Power Up camp has been incredibly rewarding.” said Brian Conoley, Manager of Outreach Programs. “Watching these young adults grow together, connect, learn and support each other in a safe space created by the Y has been the highlight of my 20 plus years working with youth. I embrace the future these kids are building for themselves and for generations to come because I see their heart, energy and cleverness in motion, every day.”

“Our camps provide important skill development opportunities for children while deepening social connections in a fun-filled environment,” added Tabatha McCrea, Director of Childcare. “All of our programs truly help each camper reach their full potential.”

YMCA day camps offer a diverse lineup of programs, including sports, arts, science, and outdoor play — all delivered by trained staff in a safe, inclusive space designed to help kids thrive.

The YMCA of Fredericton continues to collaborate with donors, community partners, and volunteers to ensure no child is left out of the camp experience.

YMCA LAND USE COMMUNICATION

YMCA LAND USE COMMUNICATION

The YMCA of Fredericton is a dynamic charity connecting with more than 50,000 people across the region to build healthy communities. Since 1853, the YMCA has been promoting positive values that build spirit, mind and body. YMCA services include Membership, Health and Wellness, Employment, Child Care, Day Camping, Global & Community Programs, Youth and Leadership Development.

In 2023 the YMCA of Fredericton Board of Directors and CEO formally adopted a new strategic plan “A YMCA where you belong!”. The plan has re-affirmed our YMCA’s commitment to serving the community while maintaining excellence in our Wellness Centre and Child Care operations. The plan also acknowledges opportunities exist for YMCA development where those two goals intersect.

The YMCA of Fredericton will be exploring future “Land Use Opportunities” on the 570 York Street Property for community-based programs, capital investment and revenue generation.

To ensure due diligence while exploring potential opportunities, we will be undertaking the following steps while considering a development project on the southwest parking lot at the corner of Albert Street and York Street.

·       Property surveyed for the purposes of sub-dividing and re-zoning.

·       Preliminary Elevation Drawing and Plan for any future site development

·       Soil testing and environmental site assessments.

·       Application to the city of Fredericton to Sub-Divide and Re-Zone a portion of the YMCA property.

If the project steps above result in adequate opportunity, the YMCA Board of Directors will consider organizational factors and community feedback before moving forward with any development and will remain committed to keeping its members and our community informed.

Question regarding this project may be directed to Darcy Delaney, President and CEO of YMCA of Fredericton. darcy.delaney@ymcafredericton.org

National Day for Truth & Reconciliation – Monday, September 30

National Day for Truth & Reconciliation – Monday, September 30

The following statement refers to the Indian Residential School System. A National Indian Residential School Crisis Line has been set up to provide support for residential school Survivors and others affected. People can access emotional and crisis referral services by calling the 24-hour national crisis line: 1-866-925-4419.

September 30, 2024 is the fourth annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, as well as Orange Shirt Day. National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the thousands of Indigenous children lost to the residential school system, Survivors, and their communities. Orange Shirt Day was initiated by Phyllis Webstad sharing her experiences as a residential school Survivor. On this day, we are called on to engage in learning and dialogue about the colonial violence enacted by the state and church-run residential school system, and its ongoing intergenerational and community harm. Both dates also invite genuine commitment to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls for Action.

Today, YMCA Canada wishes to express solidarity with Indigenous communities, and reflect upon our ongoing need to engage in a process of Truth and Reconciliation. We continue to mourn and bear witness as more unmarked graves are recovered across Canada. We want to acknowledge the pain that each recovery means for Indigenous communities, including Indigenous YMCA staff, volunteers, and members.

This National Day of Reconciliation, YMCA Canada encourages all non-Indigenous individuals and organizations to act in solidarity with Indigenous communities, including our own leadership, staff, volunteers, and members. The process of reconciliation requires that non-Indigenous individuals and settler-led Institutions recognize and reflect upon their ongoing responsibilities to the Indigenous nations of the land. This work must be done not just today, but every day.
