Youth Registered Programs (Gr. 1-8)

Welcome to the YMCA Youth Programs. We offer a variety of programs for your children to enjoy! All YMCA Youth Programs are focused on developing fundamental movement skills and physical literacy for all children through sport, friendships, and fun!

With a YMCA membership, children register in any TWO programs to take part in! This can include one aquatics program per child, per term.

Supervision & Child Protection Policy:

  1. Children 9 years and younger must be signed in and out of registered programs (ie basketball, dance, tennis, etc.). A parent/guardian (16+) MUST stay in the gym/viewing gallery for the entire program.
  2. Children 10 – 11 years MUST have a parent/guardian (16+) escort them to and from registered programs (ie basketball, dance, tennis, etc.). Pick up MUST be on time.
  3. Children 12+ years can attend registered programs (ie basketball, dance, tennis, etc.) without a parent/guardian.
  4. Please remove outdoor footwear when entering a gymnasium or a facility that requests you to remove your outdoor shoes.
  5. Some facilities have designated washrooms for our programs. Please ensure you are utilizing the proper washrooms.
  6. Siblings of participants MUST to stay with their parents and cannot be roaming in the hallways.

Badminton

Learn about physical fitness, rules of the game, basic/technical skills and play singles/doubles games! Develop your grip, ready position, footwork, high/low serves, drop shots, smashes, singles/doubles strategies and placement of the shuttle.

Badminton is being offered at the Beginner/Intermediate level (Gr. 2+) and at the Advanced level (Gr. 5 – 8)

The Badminton Session will run from the week of January 9  – week of March 27

Basketball

Want to learn basketball skills like your favourite NBA players? Our new program is a developmental youth basketball program offered in conjunction with Canada Basketball and the NBA. Youth will participate in age appropriate basketball development which will include learning the rules of the game, skill work and teamwork, all while having fun!

Dance

Dance is a great opportunity to introduce your child to many fundamental movement skills and the Y Dance program will help to continue to grow your child’s dance skills. Our YMCA instructors will keep your child on their toes and having fun!

Ballet

Learn basic ballet positions and classical movements along with barre work, strength and grace. *Please note that an additional program fee is required.

Tap

Learn a group dance using common tap steps such as the shuffle, shuffle ball change, double shuffle, hop shuffle, flap, flap ball change, running flaps, flap heel and buffalo. for students who want to be challenged in tap. *Please note an additional program fee is required.

Jazz

Join us for our fun filled Jazz classes where Jazz is not the only dance style learned! Choose from:
Jazz/Hip-Hop – This form of Jazz is the more popular commercial Jazz which combines Hip-Hop and Jazz and is often performed to pop music. * Please note an additional program fee is required.
Jazz/Lyrical – A mix of jazz and ballet, tell a story through dance, lyrics and feelings. Work on technique for turns, leaps and flexibility. * Please note an additional program fee is required.

Fencing

New and returning fencers can participate in this physical program built around the sport of fencing.

Youth Fencing I & II

Grades 3 – 8

An introductory program for younger fencers. The basics of the sport will be taught using the full steel and protective gear. No prior experience is expected. All equipment is provided as well as a membership with the provincial sports organization (FENB). Both programs are held off-site at the Capital Y Fencing Club – 512 George Street.

The Fencing Session will run from the week of January 9 – week of March 27

Gymnastics

Gymnastics is the perfect activity for the development of Physical Literacy – the fundamentals of moving the body and moving objects. Developing physical literacy through gymnastics enables children of all ages to move confidently and efficiently in any environment. Recreational Gymnastics here at the YMCA is a great opportunity for children to develop these crucial skills.

Beginner Gymnastics

Grades 1 – 4

In this program, youth will be introduced to a variety of skills on the floor, low and high beams, bars, vaults and mini-trampoline. Progress reports will be provided at the end of each term and badges will be awarded at the completion of each level.

Intermediate Gymnastics

Grades 2+

Youth will train for 2 hours a week while continuing to develop a variety of skills on all events. Progress reports will be provided at the end of each term and badges will be awarded at the completion of each level.

Advanced Gymnastics

Grades 3+

In this program, youth will have the opportunity to train more throughout the week while they enjoy a fun recreational setting (3 hours). Gymnasts will continue to work through a variety of skills on all events. Progress reports will be provided at the end of each term and badges will be awarded at the completion of each level.

Tumbling

Grades 1+

Acrobatic tumbling is centred on fundamental acrobatic technique to increase flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, timing, body awareness and confidence. Progress reports will be provided at the end of each term and badges will be awarded at the completion of each level. Beginner/Intermediate/ Advanced

Karate

The YMCA Karate program begins by introducing members to the basics of Shotokan and allows the opportunity for progression from beginner to advanced.

Intro to Karate

Intro to Karate will NOT be running in the Winter 2023 term. 

Grades 1 – 6

This program will introduce students to the basics of traditional Shotokan while improving physical capacity. It is the prerequisite to all levels of karate.

* Please note an additional program fee is required to offset costs associated with this program.
* All karate classes require a uniform ($48 – available for order from head instructor)

Karate (Beg./Int./Adv.)

Grades 2+

Practicing twice a week, youth will continue to develop the basics of traditional Shotokan*.

Prereq: Intro to Karate (yellow belt) and approval from head instructor.

* Please note an additional program fee is required to offset costs associated with this program.
** All karate classes require a Gi ($48-$55 – available for order from head instructor)

Karate for Adults and Teens

Grades 8+

Learn about traditional Shotokan while improving your concentration, discipline, respect, control, physical fitness, self-esteem and confidence.

Prereq: Intro to Karate (yellow belt).

* Please note an additional program fee is required to offset costs associated with this program.
* All karate classes require a uniform ($55 – available for order from head instructor)

Movin’ and Groovin’

Grades 1 – 6

Movin’ and Groovin’ is a fun-filled creative movement dance class to learn how to move to the beat and have fun.

Multisport

Want to try a little bit everything? Multisport offers youth the opportunity to play a variety of sports!

Multisport is offered to youth in grades 1 – 3.

Multisport will run from the week of January 9 – the week of March 27

Learn to Play: Racquet Sports

This program will introduce youth to two different racquet sports: Tennis and Badminton. Through drills and game play, youth will learn the basic skills of racquet sports.

Tennis

Tennis Instruction is designed for young players with no previous tennis experience. The program focuses on learning tennis through play, rather than the traditional lesson based model

UNB S.P.R.I.N.G.

The S.P.R.I.N.G. program is a two hour gym and swim initiative for children with special needs aged 3-15 years old. The program pairs up a child with a disability (either physical or mental, or both) with a university student for two hours of one-on-one time! It allows children who may have difficulty participating in regular sports and activities to interact with others, develop essential life skills, and always leave with a smile!

UNB S.P.R.I.N.G. will run from the week of January 9 – week of March 27

Volleyball

Volleyball instruction at the YMCA is offered for youth, grades 3-8.

Beginner Volleyball Instruction

Grades 3 – 5

Learn the basic skills of volleyball through skills and drills in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

Intermediate/Advanced Volleyball Instruction

Grades 3 – 8

Take the skills learned in beginner volleyball to the next level. Strengthen your serve and perfect your spike.
