Brian’s YMCA journey began at just nine years old, taking swim lessons at the Saint John YMCA. Since then, the YMCA has been woven through every stage of his life – from youth programs and staying active after university to aquafit, personal training, and serving as President of the Fredericton YMCA Board of Directors. What started as a place to stay active became so much more. Through the YMCA, Brian built lifelong friendships that extended well beyond the fitness centre, leading to golf outings, Christmas and lobster parties, regular walks with friends, and countless moments of connection. Along the way, he also gave back by teaching the Y Way to a Healthy Back program and supporting community initiatives that have strengthened Fredericton.
When asked what the YMCA means to him, Brian’s answer is simple: people. He describes it as an inclusive place where everyone belongs – a place where people are welcomed without judgment and encouraged to be their best, physically, mentally, and emotionally. For Brian, it’s the friendships, sense of community, and opportunities to make a difference that have kept him involved over the years. To him, there is no other place quite like the YMCA.
Mack’s Perspective: What Working with Brian Has Meant to Me
As Brian’s personal trainer, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing those values firsthand. He arrives at every session prepared, often with notes from his own independent workouts, and is always willing to learn and challenge himself. More importantly, he’s taught me what it means to simply be a good human. Brian greets everyone with kindness, shares his wisdom generously, and has been one of my biggest supporters as I pursue my studies and career. His impact extends far beyond the gym, and I feel incredibly fortunate that the YMCA brought our paths together.
