YMCA of Fredericton – Announcement

July 8, 2021

Dear Valued YMCA Member,

On behalf of the YMCA of Fredericton Board of Directors, I am providing this communication to inform you that our President and CEO, Jason Dickson, has announced his resignation from the YMCA, having accepted a new role as the CEO of Baseball Canada.

Michelle Paquin, CPA, CA, who currently serves as the Director of Finance within the organization will assume the position of Acting President and CEO until a new President and CEO has been recruited. Michelle and her Senior Leadership Team has the full support of both the Operating and Endowment Boards in this capacity, and they will collectively facilitate a smooth transition and maintain operational continuity.

The executive search process will begin in the coming days and we are expecting to fill this position in the Fall of 2021.

Since joining our YMCA in the Summer of 2016, Jason has modelled a transparent, respectful and progressive leadership style that has well served our YMCA community; this has been well evidenced in recent months as he has navigated our YMCA through unprecedented challenges arising from the pandemic. Jason and his team have continued to advance our Healthy People for Healthy Communities vision with strengthened membership recruitment and retention, partnership building and engagement, operational health and vitality, and risk mitigation and management.

While Jason will be missed in his role as President and CEO, we’re confident he’ll remain a long standing champion of the YMCA and the community it serves. We thank Jason for his valued service and impact on our YMCA community, and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

Sincerely,

Ben Coles

YMCA Canada, Canada Day 2021 Statement

YMCA CanadaCanada Day 2021 Statement

While July 1st is a time of celebration and rest for many, YMCA Canada would also like to recognize how challenging a year it has beenThere has been a lot to be thankful for, but this is also a time to pause and reflect on where we have been, and where we want to be as a country.

In recent months, we have witnessed the discovery of the remains of 215 children buried on the grounds of the Kamloops Residential School, the 104 remains uncovered at the former site of the Brandon Residential School, and the 751 remains found at the former site of the Marieval Indian Residential School at Cowessess, Saskatchewan, and with the knowledge that many more discoveries are to come. In the same time period, we have also witnessed the Islamophobic attacks in London, Ontario, and a documented rise in Anti-Asian hate crimes. This is not the Canada we want to be.

We have a lot of work to do to live up to the promise of the Canada We Want. The Canada We Want is a place where oppressive and systemic barriers have been removed and replaced by opportunityand where all have a deep sense of belonging. And we know a lot more work, by a lot more people and organizations, including ours, is needed to get us there.
