Community In Action:

Meet Heather

I retired 11 years ago and joined the YMCA to overcome my fear of the water. Friends encouraged me to try aquafit, and the Courage Program helped me build the confidence I needed. What started as a fitness goal quickly became much more. “It’s been a saviour. It is a saving grace.”

A few years ago, I faced health challenges in the middle of COVID and didn’t know what I could do anymore. I came to the Y, spoke with Joan, and began working with Stephanie through personal training. Looking back, that was a milestone for me during a very scary time.

Today, I continue to challenge myself through new classes and experiences. I love the instructors and staff – everyone is just so great here. The YMCA is more than a gym. This is a happy place to come to. The friendships I’ve gained here are pretty special, and people genuinely care about one another. For many older adults, especially widows and widowers, the Y becomes a social lifeline and a reason to get up in the morning.

When people ask me why I chose the Y, my answer is simple: “Why not the Y?”
