YMCA of Fredericton Responds to Unprecedented Demand for Camp Support

Fredericton, NB — The YMCA of Fredericton is answering an urgent call for support this summer, providing financial assistance to more than 250 children between the ages of 6 and 13 to attend YMCA day camps — a fivefold increase in just two years.

This unprecedented demand for camp support reflects a growing number of families who are facing economic pressures and seeking opportunities for their children to stay active, connected, and engaged during the summer months.

Thanks to the generous contributions from the Epsilon Y Service Club as well as increased community support for the YMCA’s Gift of Camp program, more children than ever are able to access safe, inclusive, and enriching summer camp experiences.

“Many families in our community are struggling to keep pace with rising costs of living,” said Darcy Delaney, President and CEO of the YMCA of Fredericton. “The Y will always be here to make sure all children have access to life-changing experiences like day camp.”

“We have been so fortunate to receive more funding for our Gift of Camp program,” said Elizabeth Kearns, Director of Development. “Over each of the past two years our impact has doubled — from supporting fewer than 50 children in camp to over 250 this summer.”

Among those receiving support, more than 20% are enrolled in the Youth Power Up Camp Program, a specialized offering for middle school–aged children that includes volunteering, community service, and leadership development. The camp continues the YMCA’s Power Up Program, which runs during the school year and focuses on building confidence, resilience, and positive social connections.

“Power Up camp has been incredibly rewarding.” said Brian Conoley, Manager of Outreach Programs. “Watching these young adults grow together, connect, learn and support each other in a safe space created by the Y has been the highlight of my 20 plus years working with youth. I embrace the future these kids are building for themselves and for generations to come because I see their heart, energy and cleverness in motion, every day.”

“Our camps provide important skill development opportunities for children while deepening social connections in a fun-filled environment,” added Tabatha McCrea, Director of Childcare. “All of our programs truly help each camper reach their full potential.”

YMCA day camps offer a diverse lineup of programs, including sports, arts, science, and outdoor play — all delivered by trained staff in a safe, inclusive space designed to help kids thrive.

The YMCA of Fredericton continues to collaborate with donors, community partners, and volunteers to ensure no child is left out of the camp experience.
