Please join us in celebrating National Volunteer Week!

This year’s theme for National Volunteer Week is “The Value of One, the Power of Many”. Larry Llewellyn is not only a member of the YMCA of Fredericton; he is also one of the valuable volunteers who directly embodies this credo. Larry is a huge fan of the Group Fitness classes such as rowing, Glutes & Core and Aqua fit. Yet, as a long time cyclist, his passion lies with the spinning classes. In fact, Larry is one of the Y’s beloved Spin Instructors, and he generously donates his time to teaching Cycle Fit to a devoted group of stationary cyclists. Larry’s classes are always a raucous adventure as he motivates his spinners to take on those hills with a musical backdrop of hits from the 70s and 80s. Larry inspires us all to remember that volunteering should include passion and fun.

Larry and his wife spent 40 years away from Fredericton and moved back 5 years ago. Upon their return, the choice was obvious to join the YMCA because it had always felt like family for them. The Y helped Larry and his wife reintegrate into the community where they grew up and paved the way to reconnecting with old friends and making new ones.

For Larry, volunteering is an excellent way to multiply the number of contacts in the community. Larry has volunteered his time as a Spin Instructor at both the YMCA in Dallas, Texas and most recently here at the YMCA of Fredericton. He likes that he can meet a whole group of people all at once. “You may not know all of their names initially, but they know you and it can grow from there.”

Larry takes a moment to reflect on these unusual times in which we all find ourselves. “The YMCA has been valuable to me (and I have heard many other members make the same statement) during the whole COVID-19 pandemic. Even though the Y was closed for a period, and there have been changes and modifications to how things are done, the ability to create some normalcy in a safe and hospitable environment has been life saving for many people. The Y staff have been so fabulous, and for me, the ability to participate in classes as well as teach spin has been the highlight during this uncertain time.”

Larry is pictured here, with his daughter, at a past Spin-A-Thon Charity Event for YMCA Strong Communities (you guessed it, volunteering his time!). Thank you Larry for your time, talent and friendship that you share with us each week!
