Swim Instructor

Location: YMCA of Fredericton, 570 York St, Fredericton, NB

Salary: $16.80/hour

Status: Part Time

Position Overview:

  • Delivers course content and examines participants following established YMCA criteria.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance. Secures a substitute if unable to cover scheduled shift.
  • Develops and implements sequential weekly lesson plans.
  • Recognizes participant learning styles and delivers content accordingly.
  • Coaches and develops participants to meet success.
  • Communicates (verbal and written) child’s progress to parents and supervisors.
  • Maintains accurate, up to date weekly progress sheets and records for participants.
  • Takes attendance, ensures participants are signed into and out of the program.
  • Sets up and takes down recreational, program and other equipment as required – at the same time checking that equipment is safe and in good repair (reporting immediately all malfunctions and removing the damaged equipment immediately from circulation).
  • Completes all documentation related to swim lessons (ie incident reports, attendance, progress reports, etc.).
  • Actively participates in scheduled programs, meetings and special events.
  • In collaboration with individual program members, program volunteers and YMCA program staff, assists and encourages program members to access additional appropriate programs offered at this location.

General YMCA Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates appropriate behaviours in line with our mission, vision and values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the association. Represents the YMCA and the association in a professional manner.
  • Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services.
  • Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Current certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards: Bronze Cross, Workplace Standard First Aid & CPR-C.
  • Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Current YMCA or Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor certification.
  • Previous experience instructing swim lessons an asset.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication(verbal & written) with members, staff and volunteers.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity.
  • Must have evening and weekend availability.
